1. Have you ever held a garage sale? What are your best garage sale tips? We’ve had two (I think?) garage sales over the years, and we’ve usually done them on Friday / Saturday. I am thinking this year of maybe trying Thursday night, Friday (like 9-4) and then Saturday 9-1? I am not too sure when this is going to happen, but I’d like to get it out of the way sooner rather than later – while I am still motivated to get things out of my house! As for amazing tips from me, I’m not too sure? I do always like to have a “free” bin of small toys and other things for people to pick through.

2. What’s on your playlist right now?  I will be of no help with this one, but I am looking for some new music!  Who / what are you listening to? Also, do you have any concert plans this summer?

I usually just do Saturday, I feel like more serious buyers are out on Saturday and I don’t like them to have nothing to look at if everything goes the day before. I usually a set everything out no later than 5:30am, Texans take garage sales seriously and shoppers are really out that early! I also try to team up with friends or family so there’s more reasons for people to stop. Holiday weekends, like Memorial Day weekend, Labor Day weekend or when your subdivision/town has a community yard sale. I only price tag items that I am firm on the price… everything else they can just ask. Usually I’ll put out a cooler of drinks and price them at $.5 0/each… which is actually more fun for the kiddos to do. Make sure your yard is mowed, as silly as that sounds… it lets passers-by know you take care of your things. I don’t advertise it, but most items (unless tagged firm) are 1/2 off after 12:00 or 1:00. I closed down around 2:00 and I put a box together of certain items that didn’t sell and that I do not want to throw away out by the road with a signs that says, “FREE: MUST TAKE ALL.” That box always gets picked up within an hour.

I had a garage sale once. It was lame. I think I made $50? Over the course of hours. I keep telling myself I want to do another one to get rid of a bunch of stuff but it hasn’t happened yet. Maybe if my neighbors do a big cul de sac sale but they’re all pretty anti social so I doubt it.

My play list is that I dug up both of my old iPods. I haven’t added any new music to them since around 2008 so that’s what I listen to. No concert plans. I used to go to a few shows a week when I was younger. Now, that would break the bank. The same venues that used to charge $5-$10 now charge around $30 after fees. And forget seeing a band that has a fan base over maybe 50 people, that’d be $100. Plus, a lot of the cool venues here shut down.

I wonder if there are different styles for different areas? I went to garage sales early mornings for years. I got the sense that lots of pros were out on weekdays (this was there job)- weekends for everyone.
My neighbor holds at least 2 each year- definitely Sat. & Sun. And she always makes at least 1000 which is amazing. She is really friendly but usually asks 2 or 3 per item (hardly ever a quarter) and prints out eBay comparable a for the bigger items (& doesn’t take a whole lot less). She also always has multi-family sales.
Last year I sold a few bigger items there using her technique & was shocked when I sold everything.

    1. My group of friends and I do an annual yard sale every year. In fact ours is this weekend. We try and rotate whose house we do it at, but generally there is an area here where we live that gets hit with a ton of foot traffic so that’s usually around where we do it. I usually make anywhere between $300-500 a year. Which honestly for stuff that was sitting around my house, I’m happy. I’m very fair with my prices and I’m always up for negotiating. I usually just want to get rid of it, and it’ll end up at our local thrift store if I don’t sell it. We try and start around 7-8am and we only do Saturday. Because it gets the most people out and there’s not really much left by Sunday. Good luck if you do one 😉
    2. Lately, my playlist consists of Pandora only haha. So either Disney for the little ones or oldies for me.

For finding new music, you could make a Pandora station with a song or an album or artist you like, and then see what other songs they play, and you may find some new favorites! 🙂

I am always listening to Ed Sheeran. haha 🙂 As for concerts, my husband and a couple of my girls saw Fall Out Boy a couple months ago and we are all going to see 5 Seconds of summer in July. 🙂

I keep saying I’m going to have a garage sale. I’ve been saying that since I brought a bunch of crap from my rental into the house we bought, but swore I wasn’t going to keep it. Maybe this summer we’ll actually manage to have one. We live in the perfect neighborhood for it.

I usually listen to spotify and lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Chris Stapleton, his entire album is so amazing. I’ve also been listening to the Bottlerock playlist, it’s music festival in Napa I’m going to next month. I’m also going to the Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco in August, so I’m prepping with Radiohead. Also, James Bay’s album is awesome.

  9. JellyBean

I’m mostly listening to Purity Ring, but I have Grimes, Chvrches, Trifonic, Emancipator, and Crystal Castles on my play list. Nobody ever knows who any of them are…

I’ve been selling my things quickly using the app OfferUp. So much easier than a yard sale and better money. My husband and I drive around a bit on Sunday evenings to find all the good free stuff people leave on the side of the road. We supplement our income this way and OfferUp has been allowing us to do this.
